Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has thrown a last minute bombshell on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, announcing his resignation less than two weeks before the eleciton.
The General Election is to be held on July 10, and there is no anchor minister replacement for Marine Parade GRC where Goh Chok Tong is.
Goh Chok Tong did not tell Lee Hsien Loong about his intent to resign until yesterday (June 24) in a letter which he made public:
“Dear Prime Minister,
As Parliament has now been dissolved, I write to inform you that I have decided not to stand in the coming General Elections.”
The relationship between Goh Chok Tong and Lee Hsien Loong has been tense in the past decade, as the latter refusing to accept suggestions from his predecessor Prime Minister.
