In collusion to protect hotel’s interests on accommodation for tourists, Singapore government fined a Singaporean S$88,000 for using Airbnb.

Joel Su Jiqing, 38, was forced to plead guilty for providing short-term accommodation “without permission”. His only crime is to lease the rooms at a cheaper rate than the hotels.

The former property agent leased several private condominium apartments in Geylang via online house-sharing site, Airbnb.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority warned Singaporeans not to rent out their residence to tourists, threatening that 10 people has since been arrested for using Airbnb.

Despite often boasting about embracing new technologies, the Singapore government refused to legalise house-sharing applications to protect the hotel industry.
