Acting swiftly on his boss Lee Hsien Loong’s order, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Teo Chee Hean today (June 17) declared that the Government will decide to demolish 38 Oxley Road, regardless of Lee Kuan Yew’s Last Will. The ruling party government now has the power to over-ride the will and kick the present owner of the house, Lee Hsien Yang, out:

“Many critical decisions on the future of Singapore were made there by Mr Lee and our pioneer leaders in 38 Oxley Road. The committee has thus been looking at the options available for 38 Oxley Road while paying particular attention to respecting Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes for his house.”

DPM Teo Chee Hean identified himself as the Chairman of the “Ministerial Committee” and that other members are Minister Lawrence Wong, Minister Grace Fu and Law Minister K Shanmugam – all Lee Hsien Loong’s favourite cronies:

“Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had recused himself from all Government decisions to be taken on the Lee’s family home. There is nothing secret about this committee. It is a committee like numerous other committees that Cabinet may set up from time to time to consider specific issues.”

DPM Teo Chee Hean also denied the committee is a legal corruption and abuse of power by Lee Hsien Loong:

“Due process is needed to consider the various options before making any decision on the house. This can take some time.”

DPM Teo Chee Hean also suggested that government can ignore Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes and continue to build a heritage centre out of the house for visitors to pay respect:

“The committee has tasked the relevant agencies to study a range of options for the property… The committee has also been studying various intermediate options such as demolishing the house but keeping the basement dining room where many important historical meetings took place, with an appropriate heritage centre attached. These studies are ongoing.”

DPM Teo Chee Hean is a trusted crony of Lee Hsien Loong and is obviously acting on the Prime Minister’s expressed order because the DPM has never once formed a “Ministerial Committee” by himself in his over 30 years-long of political career, lest a committee to interfere in the will of Lee Kuan Yew.
