Singapore’s state media TodayOnline today (Mar 29) published a letter stating that government policies is always correct and that communication is at blame for Singaporeans’ failure to “understand” the policies.

The letter is written by Kwan Jin Yao, a known right-wing academic from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy under the Singapore Management University (SMU). The letter writer was also a former writer for government-backed blog The Middle Ground.

Kwan Jin Yao contented that the 6.9 million population and recent 30% water price increase saw similar ineffective “communication” resulting in a public backlash.

The TodayOnline forum writer wrote that disagreements and complains are “noise” that covered up the “details”:

“Even if Singaporeans are cognisant of the need for the hike — prices have not risen since 2000 and infrastructure investments are expensive, for instance — the details are lost in the noise. Few paid attention to the hike being over two phases or to the assistance to lower-income households.”
