Health Minister Gan Kim Yong was given an exclusive Chinese Emperor-like welcome ceremony at the S$2 million Teochew Festival 2016 held in Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Hall last evening (Dec 10). The Teochew-traditional ceremonial welcome consists of 8 Chinese wayang deity generals with flags, and is only meant for individuals with high honours and achievements. Health Minister Gan Kim Yong is however given the treat despite having only blisters in his ministerial role over several virus outbreaks.
Organised by the Singapore Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan Association, the event also saw other PAP Ministers like Josephine Teo, Baey Yam Keng, Sim Ann and Teo Ser Luck.
Speaking at the event in Mandarin, Minister Gan Kim Yong said that Singaporeans should understand their culture and stand united during difficult times. Below is a translation from States Times Review:
“The understanding of a common culture can unite Singaporeans during difficult times. Every Singaporean should promote the kaki lang (Teochew for my family) spirt to be united and overcome difficulties.”
This event is Minister Gan Kim Yong’s first public appearance ever since the Zika virus, tuberculous and Hep-C virus outbreak in hospitals, kindergartens and HDB. Minister Gan Kim Yong was on the issues during the outbreak and fronted the public relations department of the Health Ministry to handle public queries.
