The internet war has started: China’s state-sponsored internet propaganda team, known as the 50-cent army, clashes with Singapore’s government-sponsored internet propaganda team, Internet Brigade, over at state media Channel News Asia Facebook page.

The two propaganda teams operate in similar fashion, slandering political opponents of their government with anonymous Facebook profiles. The Singapore Internet Brigade, officially known as “counter-insurgency brigade”, was started in 2007 by the youth wing of the ruling party, Young PAP. The purpose of the propaganda team is to swing public opinion in their government’s favour through the use of multiple fake accounts.

The China’s “50-cent army” are defending China over the row with Singapore on South China Sea and the confiscation of Singapore’s armoured vehicles in Hong Kong. The two sides get into heated arguments online and started calling each other names.
