Addressing the repeated issues of train breakdowns on the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT), Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan pinned the blame solely on the terrain and bends of the train track.
“Any misalignment could trigger a power trip or even dislodge the collector shoes, causing a disruption. The sharp bends and undulating terrain further contribute to this problem. Second, the current track layout in the vicinity of Bukit Panjang Station and the LRT service routing require trains leaving the station to constantly switch tracks, which has made the switch point a critical vulnerability.”
The Transport Minister also trashed SMRT’s managing director’s earlier suggestion to scrap the LRT train system, saying that the road network in the neighbourhood is unable to cope with the sheer number of traffic.
Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will re-design the LRT system in Bukit Panjang, however, there is no mention of building new tracks to address the terrain issue he mentioned.
There is no mention of project costing or a project schedule when will the LRT system will be fixed but the Minister expressed blind faith saying “I am more confident about this than my bet on who is the next American President.”
