PAP’s MacPherson SMC MP Tin Pei Ling is cashing in on the political limelight of the Zika virus by featuring herself paying house visits to pregnant ladies in her constituency on state-controlled media Channel News Asia. MP Tin Pei Ling claimed that she visited 20 pregnant mothers in MacPherson and that she created a “special email account” to “connect everyone and make sure we have a channel to share information and updates”. Reporters from the government-controlled media were arranged to take photos of her visits.
MP Tin Pei Ling’s MacPherson constituency includes areas of Sims Drive and Aljunied Crescent, which is a major Zika virus breeding ground that saw most of the 82 victims infected. The constituency consists of low income dwellings and is worn-down due to the lack of maintenance by the local PAP town council. The run-down infrastructure of MacPherson SMC made it a perfect breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes – a very common species in tropical Singapore.
Pregnant women are most affected by the outbreak as the virus will cause birth defects. Currently, official figures stated that there are 81 victims infected with Zika. Most foreign countries have issued travel warning to Singapore, including Malaysia, which is barring Singaporeans who are running a fever from entering the country through 6 entry points.
