Following diplomatic failures, the haze from Indonesia’s forest fires is back in Singapore, pushing PSI level to 198 at 1pm. The Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA) however did not issue a health advisory because their calculation is an average 65-88 over 24 hours. The Singapore government is infamous for adjusting its own formula to suit its political agenda.

The 1-hour PM2.5 reading hit 198 in southern Singapore at 1pm, followed by 188 in the west. The reading is the lowest in the northern Singapore at 155. A PSI level between 100-199 is unhealthy, while a PSI level 200 and above is very unhealthy. There is however no stop work order regardless how unhealthy the PSI level is, even when the PSI level reached 400 in 2013.

Along with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister of Environment Masagos Zulkifli is nowhere to be seen. The Singapore government made promises about punishing companies involved with the forest fire in Sumatra Indonesia, but till date, nobody has been singled out for penalty.

Diplomacy with Indonesia is at its lowest in recent years. During the funeral of SR Nathan yesterday, Indonesians protested at the Singapore embassy for an earlier incident where a former army General was detained at Changi Airport. The Singapore embassy was opened up for signing of condolences for the former President. Indonesia President Joko Widodo cancelled a leaders retreat with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong earlier this week.
