In a Facebook post last night (Aug 7), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong continued his hard-selling of the Trans-Pacific Pact (TPP) but gave no details of the secret trade pact. The Singapore Prime Minister said that TPP promotes peace and interdependence:
“It is not just about exports but also about imports. It will benefit consumers as well as producers. Our people will enjoy a wider range of products, services, and opportunities that will improve their livelihoods.
It also has a strategic dimension. It promotes interdependence instead of rivalry, and ultimately peace instead of war.”
However, the exact clauses of TPP was not disclosed to Singaporeans and neither was the acceptance of TPP debated in Parliament. PM Lee’s relentless push for the TPP is a decision made by himself in his usual dictatorial fashion, just as is the decision to send troops to Iraq. PM Lee said that he is pushing for peace but he has also recently committed to send more armed forces to assist US in the Iraq war.
The 2 US presidential nominees, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, have committed to drop TPP in their respective election campaign. Current US President Obama has only 5 months left in office and the TPP deal is likely to be cancelled once he leave office. According to independent observers, PM Lee Hsien Loong is wasting his time pushing for the TPP when the new leadership has clearly indicated their intentions to not pursue the pact.
