Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat was discharged from Tan Tock Seng hospital yesterday (Jun 26) after suffering a stroke 6 weeks ago. In the video published by state media Channel News Asia, Minister Heng Swee Keat appeared healthy and is able to converse normally.
However, the Minister will continue to be absent from work on medical leave and doctors have advised him to not receive visitors to minimise the the risk of infection. Currently, former Finance Minister, DPM Tharman, is taking over his Finance Minister portfolio. His MP duties for Tampines GRC was taken over by a grassroot leader appointed by the party, while his appointment as co-chairman of the committee for Future Economy is taken over by Minister of Trade and Industry S Iswaran.
Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat was originally tipped as the the favourite to take over retiring Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, over Minister Chan Chun Sing and Minister Tan Chuan Jin. It remains to be seen if the 54-year-old will continue his political appointment as strokes are usually recurrent.
