Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan Jin saw two golden opportunities to be popular and he is quick to claim credits. Just yesterday (June 9), Minister Tan praised “bao lady”, a single mother of 3 who gives out free buns to the needy at the Ang Mo Kio food stall she is operating. Seeing “bao lady” taking the headlines and earning praises from the public, Minister Tan cozy up to her and even met up with her, saying that his Ministry will support similar initiatives.
Today (June 10), the opportunistic Minister joined in the fray criticizing an ill-mannered woman who also took the headlines for the wrong reason when she was filmed berating a deaf cleaner. Minister Tan Chuan Jin today wrote in a Facebook post:
“Whether you have flu or not, or if a person is disabled or not, one shouldn’t have behaved in the way the woman did. Respect our fellow workers.”
It is understood that Minister Tan Chuan Jin only joined in to criticize when he saw the news took headlines. Minister Tan is one of the 3 candidates positioned to be the next Prime Minister. As Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat dropped out of the race due to a stroke, the PM-contest is only left between Minister Tan Chuan Jin and Minister Chan Chun Sing.
Minister Chan Chun has been sidelined as a Minister-without-portfolio and the NTUC chief position – widely known to be a supporting ministerial role instead of a PM-line up. This left Minister Tan Chuan Jin being the PM’s favourite at the moment. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had a cancer relapse two years ago and are unlikely able to continue his third term.
