2 Singaporean railway maintenance trainees were killed today (Mar 22) around 11.10am by an oncoming train at Pasir Ris station. Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26, and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, were hit by the train in front of them while they were walking along a 0.5m wide footpath beside the train track. The two trainees, who just joined the company slightly more than a month ago, were part of a 15-man maintenance group attending to a signal fault and were walking in a single file just behind the supervisor in the second and third position.
SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek offered no explanation why is a maintenance team dangerously working on a track where there is a train in live operation, and simply said “This is standard…It is a routine activity.”. About 35 people were on the train and had to disembark when the train came to a stop due to the incident. Pasir Ris station were closed for more than two hours after the incident.
This is the second incident since Oct 2010, where a maintenance technician was also fatally hit by a LRT train while attending to a fault.
