The ruling party PAP is fielding a member of the Aljunied GRC suicide team in GE2015 to contest in the upcoming by-election in Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC). 48-year-old K. Muralidharan, is a corporate lawyer from law firm Rajah & Tann.

K. Muralidharan is married with 4 children and his father was a former political detainee who later pledged his loyalty to the ruling party in order to remain in Singapore. After losing the General Election in 2015, the busy corporate lawyer disappeared from Aljunied constituency and stopped contributing to the community.

Speaking at the press conference today with Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shamugaratnam by his side, K. Muralidharan did not make any commitment or give any reason for contesting to be a MP. The corporate lawyer has no issues that he want to fight for and he gave a general assurance that he “will fight hard for every vote, and will not take any vote for granted”. Reading from his script, he commented that “Bukit Batok is a mature town” and he will “help elderly to age gracefully”. There is no specifics given.

However given his busy schedule as the head of commercial litigation, he refused to comment about whether he will quit his full time job and serve as a MP full time.

He will be facing a one-to-one contest with the Singapore Democratic Party’s Dr Chee Soon Juan. Dr Chee Soon Juan promised voters to serve full time and serve as a check and balance questioning the ruling party in Parliament.
