Muhammed Fazrie Mohamad Ridzuan, 24, was sentenced to 9 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane today for robbing an 88-year-old elderly which led to her death in the tussle. On the morning of 12 Apr 2014, Muhammed then a 22-year-old unemployed had only S$1.80 in his pocket and was desperate for money to buy food to feed his girlfriend’s daughter. He spotted 88-year-old Mdm Lee buying food at a Teck Whye Lane coffeeshop and targeted to rob her as she appeared frail-looking and weak.

Muhammed followed the old lady into a lift at Block 115 Teck Whye Lane and at the ninth storey, he said “Sorry Auntie” and snatched her purse. The tussle caused Mdm Lee to fall backward and her head hit the floor. Muhammed found only S$22 in the purse and threw it away into the a rubbish bin. Mdm Lee suffered a serious fracture to her skull and passed away three days later in National University Hospital despite medical efforts including a skull surgery.

The tragic story of the poor robbing the poor ended with Muhammed being sentenced to a 9 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane.
