In a recent regional ice-skating competition at the Tri-Series SEA Cup, Singapore’s ice skaters won 18 golds with a full Singaporean team. Along with 46 other medals, the two-day competition saw a total of 65 competitors from Australia, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

Despite not being funded as luxuriously as the Singapore Table Tennis team and the national soccer team, the ice skaters showed great passion for the sports and soldiered on their training leading to a great result.

Another sports which suffered lack of support from the government and yet performed is the Singapore’s Dragon Boat team, where members have to defer their studies or go on no-pay leaves to represent Singapore in regional competitions. Compared to China-born Singaporean swimmer Tao Li, the government allows her to train in China on a luxurious salary package.
