Speaking at a local community dinner in Teck Ghee yesterday (Feb 20), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong claimed that the technology giants in Silicon Valley like Facebook, Google and Apple hold Singapore in high regard because Singapore does not have a hinterland and a low cost environment.
However, there have been no media reports or statements made by Facebook, Google, Apple or any companies that indicate so.
Lee Hsien Loong continued his self-praises claiming that the Singapore government is effective and the infrastructure is good:
“It’s a place where they have good business, where Singaporeans work hard, where the Government is effective, the infrastructure is good, Changi Airport is good. And so we’re here and they’re creating jobs for us and prosperity for us.”
When talking about overseas Singaporeans working and studying in San Francisco, Lee Hsien Loong painted a rosy-tinted picture saying that they will return to contribute to Singapore after they did well in their studies and work.
Despite having the Singapore economy in recession at the moment, Lee Hsien Loong avoided the current affairs and spoke with optimism about having a bright future for the country:
“Whether it’s Chinese New Year, whether it’s Christmas, whether it’s Hari Raya or Deepavali, we celebrate and we have something valuable to celebrate; a good reason to say we’ve done well. We work hard, and next year will be even better. This year is the Year of the Monkey. The monkey is always thinking of new things to do, finding a higher branch to climb, another fruit to pluck. And I think we should be like that too. If we are like that, then I think we have a bright future.”
