An 86-year-old woman was crushed to death by a bus while pushing her trolley of cardboard was revealed to be “exercising” by the Singapore police.

Police investigation officer Nor Affendy Jaffar told the court the old lady’s family said she had been collecting items as “exercise” for about three years. The police IO said that one of her sons told the inquiry that the old lady was in good health, not in any financial difficulty, and had taken to collecting recyclables as a pastime.

Chin Guan Eng was pushing a trolley of the cardboard she collected beside a parked bus at Marsiling Lane. The 58-year-old bus driver, Oh Chin Chai, then drove off the bus without seeing the old lady who was in his blind spot at the front right of the bus.

The driver has been unemployed since the incident in Nov 2014 and is struggling financially.
