Pro-government website was found spreading rumors about the real reason for the demolition of Lee Kuan Yew’s residence, claiming that it is because the government wanted to cover up a “secret tunnel” linking his home to the Istana.

The online website that claims to be an “independent” voice quoted a short paragraph in Chinese that “proved” the existence of the tunnel. Lee Kuan Yew’s residence has been demolished as stated in his will and there has been no records of the said tunnel as the website speculated.

Singapore’s online media has been plagued with false information and rumor mongering from websites like who sensationalize news for a quick buck. Many of the website’s articles are click-baits and recycled content with no substantial content. The other two websites bearing the “.sg: mark are The Middle Ground and Mothership which have proven themselves from time to time to be propaganda mouthpiece of the ruling party PAP in an effort to brush up on the government’s tainted image on the internet.

In the meantime, the Singapore government is trying to impose more censorship and charge more critics for defamation in an effort to whitewash the internet especially on the history of Lee Kuan Yew and his son, the present Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
