An Indian national construction worker was sentenced to only 4 years jail and 9 strokes of the cane for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend. Palaiyan Murugadass, 41, approached the 38-year-old Filipino maid, Allen Remedios, around 4pm on 23 Aug 2015 at the void deck of a HDB block at Tampines St 33, and repeatedly told her “You playing me. You will see, I will kill you.” Infuriated when he was ignored by his ex-girlfriend who initiated a break-up a month ago, Palaiyan slashed her face, throat and wrist with a 7cm blade penknife.
The victim was saved by a passer-by which scared Palaiyan away with him throwing the penknife into a bush and taking a cab back to his dormitory. The Filipino maid was left permanently disfigured and her windpipe was operated on.
The Singapore Police charged Palaiyan of causing grievous hurt by dangerous means with a maximum sentence of 15 years jail with fine and caning, but the Singapore Court sentenced him to only 4 years jail and 9 strokes of the cane.
