Malaysia’s ruling government Barisan Nasional will be singing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bangladesh government to send 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers into the Malaysia labour market within the next 3 years.
The MoU is expected to be signed this month and according to the Bangladesh Cabinet Secretary Md Shaiful Alam, the deal will list Bangladesh as a “source country”, opening up the floodgate to the construction, service and manufacturing industries. This news is supported by an earlier report in June 2015, where Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid had confirmed that Malaysia will indeed be opening up its labour market to Bangladesh workers.
It appears Malaysia will soon face an influx of cheap foreign labour like Singapore did, and like Singapore as well, the resulting impact will depress salaries and employment opportunities of Malaysians. More Malaysians are expected to work in Singapore as opportunities diminish in Malaysia.
