Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan today (Jan 21) announced that the new North-South Expressway, proposed to ease the congestion along Central Expressway (CTE), will have an express bus lane and a cycling route. The new dual three-lane expressway will be 21.5km long built below the ground, while a cycling and pedestrian path will be built to mirror the route.

Minister Khaw Boon Wan also proposed a second project by 2017 to remove two out of four lanes for a 450m long pedestrian and cycling lane along Bencoolen Street, between Middle Road and Bras Basah Road.

New housing estates like Bidadari Town will also have a walking and cycling lane built while existing estates like Tampines and Ang Mo Kio will first experiment with the walking/cycling lane idea.

The Transport Ministry hope to make public transport the main mode of transport for 75% of the population by 2030.
