Acting Education Ministers Ng Chee Meng and Ong Ye Kung today (Jan 19) told Singapore students to not emphasize so much on academic grades and focus on “a lifelong love of learning”.
The 2 Education Ministers gave a joint statement saying that more emphasis will be placed on outdoor education and that a “diverse landscape” of secondary schools will be created, “with distinctive programmes in various domains and applied learning opportunities.”
However the 2 Education Ministers did not comment on the PSLE streaming exam, O Level examination and the university intake criteria which placed importance on academic results.
The 2 Education Ministers are taking up the position of one Education Minister because both of them are inexperienced. Ng Chee Meng was a former SAF scholar who became the Chief of Defence Force before jumping on the political ticket, while Ong Ye Kung was a former secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Both men have no experience handling the Education ministry profile and have only been giving template speeches without making any changes to the present education system, which have flourished on the work of former Education Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
