Following complaints of congestion and overcrowding at Sengkang-Punggol LRT stations over the years, the Singapore government modified 16 of the 41 existing single-car trains to a 2-car model. The newly-modified trains are capable of taking 204 passengers and similar modifications are proposed for the Punggol Loop by 2017.

Ridership is projected to increase further with the increasing developments of BTO projects in Sengkang and Punggol. The number of LRT breakdowns lasting more than 30 minutes gone up from four in 2014 to 11 in the first three quarters of 2015. Sengkang-Punggol LRT remains the least reliable train service with the most breakdowns in 2015.
