Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam pushed the blame of slow clearance to Malaysia Checkpoint authority saying that Singapore’s clearance takes no more than 3 hours and that the media reports of 4 to 5 hours is likely to include Malaysia side.

“Singapore actively monitors the queue, and it is unlikely to exceed three hours. Media reports that cited 4 to 5 hours of waiting time likely included waiting time on the Malaysian side as well.

Our own records suggest that on our side, at most it will be two hours plus, under three hours.”

Minister K Shanmugam made the comments when he visited the Causeway checkpoint on Saturday morning (Dec 19) between 8.30am to 9.45am. He also claimed that all the drivers told him the waiting time was only 1 to 1.5 hours.

The Causeway checkpoint is currently facing a bottleneck because scores of Malaysians working in Singapore are returning home to Malaysia for the long Christmas-New Year week. There are an estimated of 400,000 Malaysians working in Singapore, excluding former Malaysians who have converted to Singaporeans.
