In his latest blog post on the upcoming opening of Downtown Line 2, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan liken the opening of the new MRT line to when his first newborn daughter grew her first teeth. Titled “Cutting teeth”, the Minister lamented that he now felt helpless and not knowing what to do:
“Well, I will soon experience my first rail line’s “teething” :(
…Will there still be teething issues despite all the tests?”
Minister Khaw Boon Wan then brought up the two breakdowns after the opening of Downtown Line 1 in Dec 2013 – one happened barely a month in Jan 2014 and the other in Mar 2014. Calling the new opening a “teething” period, the Transport Minister hope Singaporeans could manage their expectations and do not expect the newly-built railway system to be breakdown-free.
“We must also anticipate the worst, and have drawer plans for contingencies in the event that disruptions do occur.”
