In another bid to whitewash public opinions of Singapore, the Singapore government People’s Action Party used its education institute, Asian Competitiveness Institute (ACI) under the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, to publish a survey claiming that Singapore is only the 48th most expensive city in the world for locals.

This however contradicts with the findings by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) which put Singapore as the most expensive city in the world.

In the EIU report, when compared with New York, it was found that Singapore’s basic groceries are 11% more expensive, shopping are 50% more expensive and private transport is 300% higher.

In March 2014, the ACI published another report saying Singapore’s cost of living is only 60th out of 109 countries. However, its report lack credibility as many understand the lack of political independence in Singapore’s education institutes
