A scheduled meeting to upgrade the existing China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement was cancelled at the last minute today (Nov 21) in Kuala Lumpur highlighting the deteriorating relationship between China and the ASEAN members.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was the coordinator for China and ASEAN but his diplomacy failed as ASEAN members like Vietnam and Philippines refuse to work with China as China kept encroaching into their terroritories water through land reclamation and creation of artificial islands.

Earlier in the week, United States sent two new warship to Philippines and even patrolled the South China Sea, much to the dismay of China.

The upgrading of the China-ASEAN FTA has been postponed without a schedule, and are unlikely to materialize even with Singapore’s mediation.
