According to the latest employment statistics by the Minstry of Manpower, the unemploment rate for Singaporeans jumped to 3.1% from 2.9% in the third quarter of 2015.
Overall seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate however remained at 2% suggesting that non-citizens residents were able to find jobs in Singapore easier than Singaporeans. The overall employment grew by 16,400 with the construction and service sectors leading the growth. Manufactoring jobs declined 4,300 but the services and construction sectors added 17,000 and 3,800 jobs in Q3.
There were also 3.644 million employed, an increase of 1.7% as compared to a year ago, while retrenchments continue to stay high at 2,900 this quarter as compared to 3,250 in Q2.
The Ministry of Manpower did not declare the statistics for under-employment among Singaporeans.
