Scientists from Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore Infectious Diseases Initiatives and ASTARS’s Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) have identified the cause of the recent outbreak of bacteria strain Group B Streptococcus (GBS). Just in 2015 this year, the cases of GBS infections spiked up to 20 cases per week.

GIS identified the source of the bacteria strain GBS to yu sheng (raw fish), a common coffeeshop delicacy in Singapore. Yu sheng are usually made of raw Song (Asian bighead carp) and Toman (snakehead fish).
