The 33 year old new citizen from China obtained fast-tracked Singapore citizenship in 2010 under the foreign sports talent scheme. He won 2 golds in the recent Commonwealth Games but has to retire because of a recurrent injury. Speaking through a translator to the media, Zhan Jian thanked his supporters and the government agency, STTA, for their support.

“It has been a great sporting journey and I would like to thank Singapore for giving me so many opportunities. I would also like to thank STTA for nurturing and supporting me. Last but not least, special thanks to my fellow Singaporeans, teammates, coaches and fans who have supported me throughout these years.”
