In today’s Shin Ming Daily News story, the Singapore Government-controlled media speculated that residents of Tampines North have reached a population appropriate to be a Single-Member Constituency (SMC) of its own and that current Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng will be tasked to be the upcoming Tampines North SMC PAP candidate.

The flamboyant behaviour of PAP MP Baey Yam Keng has been under fire for taking selfie photos over the years by Singaporeans who find it inappropriate of a MP. The 44 year old MP is not a Minister, and neither is he holding any appointment in any ministries or committees. He was first brought into Parliament in GE2006 with a walkover by Lee Kuan Yew’s Tanjong Pagar GRC.

MP Baey Yam Keng’s presence has been largely low profile in Parliament and none of his speeches were quoted by the mainstream media. In 2012, he defended PRC scholar Sun Xu (who called Singaporeans “dogs”) by telling Singaporeans to reflect upon themselves why a foreigner would call them “dogs”:

“I think first of all, these are behaviours that this gentleman has picked up. We need to reflect upon ourselves, are we the way they described? We should take this opportunity to reflect upon ourselves, but we should (also) be confident of ourselves. Even though some of us are like that, majority of Singaporeans are gracious, there are good people in Singapore.”
