After failing to get his Ministry to sue the Opposition Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol-East Town Council (AHPETC), the Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan is now applying to add the government statutory board, Housing Development Board (HDB), as co-plantiff to sue the Opposition Town Council.
For the past two years, the Ministry of National Development (MND) refuse to release government funds of S$14 million after accusing the AHPETC for misappropriating town council funds and dishonesty. However checks by independent auditors and even the government’s Attorney General’s Office (AGO) found AHPETC clean and clear of corruption.
In April, the Singapore Court declared that the MND have no right to withhold the fund and even after losing an appeal in May, the MND still refuses to pay AHPETC $14 million. Two weeks ago on June 22, the MND made an application to list the government statutory board, HDB, as a co-plantiff.
Last month, two PAP Ministers lent weight to the issue. The Minister of Culture Lawrence Wong accused the Opposition MP for dishonesty in an open letter to state-controlled media The Straits Times. The Law Minister K Shanmugam called the chairman of the Workers’ Party Sylvia Lim a liar and said her conduct may be criminal. Till date, the Opposition MPs and Town Council remain clear of corruption and the Singapore Police have no case against them.
