A high class Chinese restaurant, the Cathay Restaurant, is shutting down due to manpower shortage, says its management. Opened in 1940 in the Cathay building at Dhoby Ghaut, the Chinese restaurant is one of Singapore’s few high class restaurants in British-colonial Singapore. It was then shut down in 1964 and reopened in 2007 with a new image.
The Cathay Restaurant is under the management of the Cathay Organization Holdings, whose core business is in the cinema theatre industry. The Chinese restaurant is the second venture to close down, with the first being a bowling centre, Jackie’s Bowl.
