3 Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighters were injured while fighting fire at a construction site dormitory at Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 this morning (Jun 11). SCDF was alerted at about 9.30am and three fire engines, three red rhinos, two fire bikes, two ambulances and six support vehicles of firefighters arrived within six minutes.
When the firefighters arrived, the construction workers have already evacuated from the dormitory and some were already on-site fighting the fire using the fire hose reel and fire extinguishers. According to the SCDF press release, the three-level building was burning “well alit” and it took an hour to extinguish using five handheld water jets and an aerial water jet.
One of the injured firefighters had chest pains while two suffered back aches and swelling in the foot. It is unknown what caused the injuries of the three firefighters. The cause of the fire is also unknown pending investigations. Fire in foreign workers’ dormitory is very common because of the poor standards of living in the dormitory.
Two months ago in April 3, two Bangladeshis were killed in a fire in a private residential apartment at Geylang Lorong 6. In 09 December 2014, four Malaysian cleaners were killed and eight, including two firefighters, were injured in a fire at a shophouse along Geylang Lorong 4.
