Singapore Olympic swimmer Quah Zheng Wen has chosen to train and study in United States, and will be leaving this Thursday (Jan 12). Quah Zheng Wen is the second national swimmer to give up training in Singapore after gold medalist swimmer Joseph Schooling.
The 20-year-old chose to study in University of California despite earning a place to study medicine in the National University of Singapore (NUS). Quah Zheng Wen has also applied to compete in US-based competitions from National Collegiate Athletic Association and awaiting clearance.
Although Singapore swimming facilities and training programs do not pale as compared to the facilities in the United States, there is a lack of support from the government as the ruling party is medals-driven. Table Tennis player Feng Tian Wei was instantaneously dropped from the national team when she did not secure any medal in the recent Olympics in Rio.
