A 19-year-old Singaporean Permanent Resident Filipino who is serving National Service full time jumped off at an unreported level from HDB block 428 at Clementi Ave 3. The incident happened last night (Feb 21) at around 11.30pm.
According to the Chinese papers, the deceased was last seen quarreling with his younger brother but he did not display any weird behaviour prior to his suicide.
This is the second NSF suicide in 3 days, after a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SVDF) NSF, Edwin Ong Koon Chwee, 21, jumped off the 4th storey at a training institute at Jalan Bahar on last Friday (Feb 19). The SCDF enlisted only on last Tuesday (Feb 16) and posted a Facebook post describing his “slight depression” and stress he faced along with his family’s financial difficulties.
NSFs are paid only S$500 in salaries and many have been in extreme stress due to financial difficulties. The Singapore law forces Singaporeans and first generation Permanent Residents to serve National Service or face a jail term of 3 years. New citizens and new PRs are exempted from NS even when they are of military-ready age below 40.
