The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has just announced that taxi drivers can now install in-car camera so as to deter unruly passengers especially those who are drunk and refuse to pay up.
LTA hope that the in-car cameras will have a deterrent effect on potential troublemakers, but it also emphasized the importance of privacy by only allowing the taxi company or the authorities to have access to the password-protected camera recordings.
In the past three months there were at least 4 cases of drunkard passengers beating taxi drivers up after refusing to pay their fares. Previously, the LTA ban in-car camera recordings citing intrusion of privacy as a concern. The introduction of this new allowance is on the backdrop of a rising number of criminal cases committed by unruly passengers.
